Kai Burgers & Dumplings

7 S Middle Neck Road
Great Neck, NY 11021

Will return.

A nice little eatery with a vodka and whisky bar (no wine ). A side from the bar food, they also serve dumplings, with good vinegar (not sweet!), which we came here for: not bad, the chives are very fresh. Will return for more. Wish them luck, to survive long term.

Pretty floor tiles. Street parking.

Rothchild’s Coffee & Kitchen

76 Middle Neck Road
Great Neck, NY 11021

Will return.

Awesome warm bread, and fresh salad – a side to the falafel.

Clean decor. Good service and good food.

At brunch, there is a party occupying two tables at the back, making the small bistro very very noisy. But I didn’t mind, given the decline this town has been experiencing, I’ll take the noise. We need a little buzz and noise, don’t we?

I was going to order the spicy cucumber cocktail but one of the ingredients – syrup stopped me.

Shakshuka is ok, will try something else next time. I took the leftover bread home – they’ll throw it away, right? The sweet busyboy even packed in a container of olive oil + balsamic reduction (sweet). Thanks

Street parking.

Nohara

5 S Middle Neck Road
Great Neck, NY 11021

Won’t return.

It’s bit hard to give a low rating to a new biz. Especially when it looks like a few youth, perhaps friends, decided to open a shop. Maybe they aim at their own age, 20 or 30 something, who might have different opinion.

Dirty water mason jar, simply gross; no excuse.

The veg noodle OG Ramen is bland. Seaweed salad is sweet. At $9, the seaweed salad size is more like a side.

The service is really good. The kid who mans the hall is very pleasant. Perhaps my body language is less than pleased at the seaweed salad, he graciously said, “if you don’t like it, I can void or change it.”

I said no to his offer.

Wooden or bamboo spoon isn’t suitable for soup.

Restaurant biz is very competitive in this little town. We see them open, we see them close. Best of the luck.

Savemore Market

The view from Diggery Inn
4219 Park Blvd
Oakland, CA 94602

A big neighborhood convenient store. It has pretty much everything, from garbage bags, wine, cold cut, eggs, fresh produce, although they don’t look all that fresh. You won’t save any pennies here -:).

Daughter Thai Kitchen

6118 Medau Pl,
Oakland, CA 94611

… more pix on Google Maps

Won’t return.

Fake flowers!

We dined outside by the curb, which is a mistake – it’s an active street. Service is good but the food is less desirable:

  • Thai beer is good –
  • Shiraz Grenache is good –
  • The appetizer beef is good, so is –
  • fried chicken is terrible –
  • sizzling seafood is good …

Metered parking lot. Sales tax is 10%+

A friend (possible relative) bought us to nice Thai restaurant with both indoor and out seatings on a busy street. It has a small parking lot.

We were able to have conversation sitting outside. I met his father a while ago in New Jersey where he used to live. The water was a celebrated Chinese historian and my visits were to establish connect, to learn our shared past. I was at the beginning of my genealogy research, so green that I didn’t know what questions to ask, unfortunately. I was told that we were related. But his father never admitted nor denied it – I’d heard through the grapevine that his family wasn’t treated well.

A very convenient spot for a quick fill. A salad and a glass of white, just what I wanted.

Both salad and wine are decent.

Street parking.

WeWork in the City

530 7th Ave
New York, NY

One of many companies or individuals use a work place. A receptionist sits by the entrance and direct the traffic: “I’ll let them know that you’re here.” I know long before the internet, many Chinese companies were sharing an office in a prestigious building, such as WTC the World Trade Center.

Joshua Bell & Jonathon Heyward @ Alice Tully Hall

Alice Tully Hall @ Lincoln Center
1941 Broadway @ 65th St.
New York, NY 10023

What A night! Joshua Bell played two pieces, with the dynamic new conductor Jonathon Heyward (like a 🕺 dance … not sure if he does yoga ). Beethoven capped the night. The audience is very appreciative and gave resounding applauses – no encore thou.

Both Bell and Heyward gave short speeches. It’s Bell’s mother’s 87th birthday, sweet – his mom and sister Rachel were in the audience too.

Heyward is an American conductor since 2016. Growing up in South Carolina and trained as a cellist and chamber musician. His parents are not in the musical field. He’s very pleasant to watch. Would like to see more of him. He definitely hit off with us, the tough New York crowd.

The program – four pieces:

  1. SIMON Fate Now Conquers
  2. VIEUXTEMPS Violin Concerto No. 5
  3. PRICE Adoration
  4. BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 2

Avery Fisher Hall was renamed to David Geffen Hall in September 2015. The renovation took place this year, reportedly will be reopen this autumn.

Sea Bar

7 Great Neck Road
Great Neck, NY

Will return.

This Mediterranean bistro has simple and pleasant deco. Single bathroom with changing table. Feels female touches. Female serving staff. The few staff in the kitchen seems women too. Reportedly, it owns by the same person who has the Greek Xpress at 37 Great Neck Road. About ten tables and a bar. While having our dinner, there are take outs. Good stem

– Grilled Sardine – excellent, just too big portion
– Grilled octopus – so so
– Sea bream on the bone – great
– Chardonnay by Mezzacorona Deolomiti 2020, is ok

Street parking, which is easy. Oh, love their pepper mill – will get one myself.
