{"id":16997,"date":"2014-09-08T10:05:38","date_gmt":"2014-09-08T17:05:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bonvoyage.ireneeng.com\/?p=16997"},"modified":"2014-09-17T20:09:45","modified_gmt":"2014-09-18T03:09:45","slug":"the-moongate-garden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bonvoyage.ireneeng.com\/?p=16997","title":{"rendered":"The Moongate Garden"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today is the Mid Autumn (Moon) Festival, \u4e2d\u79cb\u8282, thought about this\u00a0garden (ok, I admit it has nothing to do with the festival other than having <em>moon<\/em> in the name) we visited last month. The Mongate Garden was inspired by the gardens and architecture of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, China. It is\u00a0designed by architect Jean Paul Carlhian. The Temple of Heaven \u5929\u575b\u00a0in Beijing was designed using a geometrical, axial layout, centered around the cardinal points of the compass. Granite and water are used abundantly in the Moongate Garden, making it very\u00a0relaxing, even in the heat of the summer &#8211; DC can be humid.<\/p>\n<p>The Moongate Garden is a small part of the Enid A. Haupt Garden at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bonvoyage.ireneeng.com\/?p=16979\">the Smithsonian Institution Building <\/a>(Castle) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bonvoyage.ireneeng.com\/?p=15588\">in DC<\/a>. Nearby, there are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bonvoyage.ireneeng.com\/?p=16962\">Hirshhorn Museum<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Arthur M. Sackler Gallery\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bonvoyage.ireneeng.com\/?p=16973\">Sackler Gallery<\/a>, Freer Gallery of Art, <a title=\"The Ripley Garden\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bonvoyage.ireneeng.com\/?p=16943\">Ripley Garden<\/a>\u00a0&#8230; <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arthur_M._Sackler\">Sackler<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_Lang_Freer\">Freer<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Enid_A._Haupt\">Haupt<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mary_Livingston_Ripley\">Ripley<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joseph_Hirshhorn\">Hirshhorn<\/a>, most of them\u00a0were self-made in their chosen profession and some were even immigrant. I hope in the\u00a0near future, we would see more museums\/galleries bearing names Zhang, Wang, Li, Zhao, and the like in China\/USA.<\/p>\n<p>I know\u00a0a couple, both are from China. One came to USA in 1963 starting\u00a0high school and one in 1982 to attend college. They both are successful professionals, especially the late arrival who&#8217;s in the new economy (whose boss is consistently listed at the top as the richest man alive &#8211; since the company IPO&#8217;ed in 1986). The early arrival insists that their children make their own living and donate their money but the late arrival\u00a0insists to leave the entire estate to their three children.
