LIRR @ Flushing

The condo building on the former parking lot by the LIRR train on 41st Avenue in Flushing is going up quickly. The assault in Flushing is 海陆空 multifaucet: from the air, the road, the rail. A small part of it is on the water but that part poses no beauty nor headache. The airplanes, the buses and the trains are adding tension in the congested area.

Pier 17, renovation is nearly done

@ South Street Seaport

The 9th Taste of the Seaport is taking place between Pier 17 and 16. The newly built structure and the open space on the Brooklyn Bridge side is very nice. The birds are happy too. The condo building One Manhattan Square is shimmering.

Last night I can’t sleep so watched Kidnapping Freddy Heineken (2015) – Anthony Hopkins played the elderly mogul, about him being held for weeks in 1983 in Amsterdam for ransom. Looking at the Heineken Riverdeck (Lounge) makes me think: was it coincident?

New York

This building tour @ Dutch Schermerhorn Row @ South St Seaport Museum is awesome and engaging.

The United States began in New York and New York began at Seaport.

I started my American journey at the Seaport too, more than two decades ago. Pier 17 was like a magnet to me. Peking. Wedding. 9/11. Sandy. Renovation. After many tragedies, Seaport has emerged as a victor. Prettier and stronger. That, IS the New York spirit.

Ming tombs 十三陵

The compound has 13 Ming (1368-1644) emperors’ mausoleums, locates in Changping, 26 miles northwest from the center of Beijing. We call it shisan ling, thirteen tombs. The photos of the statues are on the Sacred Way leading up to Changling 长陵, the mausoleum of the 3rd emperor Yongle (永乐, 1360-1424; r. 1402-24). The color photos are taken on 2018.10.10 by my high school classmates Xu Tong and Tang Zheng – thanks sweeties. The black and white, first two are from Presbyterian Archives Research Centre, in 1911. #79736

The following three black and white are from China marine, undated. Not quite sure of the first and the third.

NYBG n Georgia O’Keeffe

This year since May, the New York Botanical Garden staged the Georgia O’Keeffe – Visions of Hawaii. The 20 paintings she did in two months in 1939 in Hawaii. (They’re not seen together since the debut in 1940.) For her Hawaiian trip, apparently, an advertiser (N.W. Heirs & Sons?) invited her over, to paint something for an pineapple company. She did and painted more The exhibit ends this month, Oct 31.
