Small and wild, it has so many varieties, a great place for green thumbs. Me has non but still enjoyed it.
Many volunteers are working there, who are friendly and talkative, even thanking us for feeding the mosquitos ha ha ha. Ops I only managed to kill one, unintentionally, as I was scratching my itchy leg.
The venue and the person: Dr. Phillips Center For The Performing Arts was opened in 2014, honoring Dr. Philip Phillips (1874-1959), who was a medical doctor from Columbia University but spent much his life at growing oranges and modernized the citrus farming industry. His parents were from France.
The complex is huge and modern. Book of Mormon is playing in the next hall. I love the white orchids. There are many seats and corners for people to relax and have conversation.
Funny when I first saw Dr. P. Phillips, I thought, don’t tell me his first name was Philip.
The opera: it’s very good, will go again. There isn’t any memorable tunes from this opera but the music over all is beautiful and evenly tempered. The conductor seems traveling, at least, between St. Pete and Orlando.
The problem:
The late comers. The first act, people kept coming. One large group came after 50 minutes.
During the second act, a person sitting at the front row, returned after eight minutes.
As usual, it’s allowed to bring in snakes and drinks to operas and classical music concerts. Today a person next to me had popcorn. It’s first time that I realized how loud eating popcorn could be. Maybe sell something like chocolate – less noisy, instead? Oh, maybe the wrapper will make noise.
Women’s bathroom is locked for no reason. The staff directed us to go to another floor, either above or below, while waiting for a security person to unlock it.
The prepaid parking is $13 but the elevator isn’t working and we couldn’t find the stairs after the show.
Opera Macbeth 麦克白 (?) 莎翁和 Verdi 的结晶
Blind ambition 盲目的野心… 挺合时宜的.
Dr. Phillips 命名的歌剧院 2014 开业. 很大. 今晚Book of Mormon在隔壁厅演. Dr P (1874 –1959) 哥大医生毕业 但以🍊王著称.
Dated decor, but the wall tiles (?) are unique.
Booth tables are bit too far from the seats. Parking spots that are closer to the restaurant is full at 11am on a Friday.
All three dishes we’ve, are pretty good:
– cold chicken
– caramelized ribs
– pickled vegetables fish
The rib is off the bone soft and the sauce is fine. But the rib itself is bland. Wondering if they just pour the sauce over it.
Bag tea cost $5.98 is over priced, especially in this kind of seting. But the young lady was very attentive, re-infused without being asked. Thank you.
They’re flexible, charging a little extra to add a few green vegetables in the fish, which is just right for us. Thanks a lot.
Population 112,641 (2020), 725k metro. Swan City is their nickname, “due to its sizeable population of swans, all of whom are descendants of two mute swans given to Lakeland by Queen Elizabeth II in 1957.” (Why would she do that – here is the reason.)
Latin restaurant Nineteen 61 is solid five star. Couple of doors away is their Saturday market on N Kentucky Ave (the Ave has many cute shops) since 2004, four blocks long; opens 8am-2pm. They also run old car shows (Lake Mirror Classic Concours and Car Show). A couple of other restaurants nearby are popular: Harry’s (is basic) and Terrace Grill (is a little stuffy … it’s hotel rooms run $140 now to $500 during the winter months.) 1961 is lively and a scene. A few steps east, is Kryger Park on Lake Mirror.
Around the corner is a cigar bar Loft that has dress code: shirt and pants.
Definitely will rerun, and may spend a night or two in town.
The smiling faces are the most endearing.
We came seven minutes before their opening but the staff is very welcoming, and seat us immediately. Thank you.
1961 was the year owner and or chef’s parents came to U.S. from Cuba – hope I get this fact right -:). They also have a banquet hall next door.
The decor is rustically beautiful. Love the exposed brick walls.
Our serve is a beautiful tall girl in short hair, who is just wonderful and attentive – thank you. I like their earthy tableware.
We’ve two small starter plates and a salad:
– octopus Pulpo: one of the best octopus I’ve had – crispy outside and tender inside.
– chips avocado – two dips are wonderful and I enjoyed the spicy one more.
– 1961 salad with salmon: the dressing is on the sweet side for me but very yummy, and I finished it. The salmon is also cooked to the perfection.
Hand soap and cream in the bathroom: soap is wonderful but hand cream is a little watery.
Two or three bar tenders have been busy since we sat down. There is a small party, 10 some young women who dressed well. The clientele is from infant to oldies like me and beyond. It’s a scene.
In and out in a little over an hour. Now heading to their street fair, which is four blocks long, and which is two doors away.
This restaurant drew us in and we’re very glad to discover a lovely town, kind of like New England quaint town. Will be back soon.
Airy decor; not sure the copper or gold color fit everyone’s taste but muted hue is nice. Service is good. And wonderful food – normal, not sweet, for the Chinese tastebud.
For lunch on a Wednesday, is more than half empty. The diners are all Chinese, conversing in Mandarin.
Tea bag. At this price range, I expect loose leaves.
No push cart for dim sum, all are carried from the kitchen.
– Chicken feet: one of better one I’ve had
– Seafood siu mai: one of the best I’ve had. Normally I don’t order it because it’s too meaty. Not this one: light and yummy
– Shanghai dumplings: xiaolongbao, they’re ok. No ginger nor vinegar were offered. I actually looking forward to the ginger.
– Two oysters: very fresh and excellent. Just too big. Have to ask for fork and knife.
– Salt n pepper scallops: fresh, light and delicious.
They never bothered to change our plates.
The two additional sauces, vinegar and hot sauce came with plastic spoon: seriously?
It seems their chef perhaps isn’t aiming at serve with these sauces, which is the norm elsewhere.
When tea runs out, open tea pot cover is indication that we need a refill, no one came to refill, till I asked.
Bathroom although clean, is couple of notch below than their dining halls decor. No seat cover.
This business has many restaurants but this is the only one so the upscale menu and has opened three years. I hope they stay open for at least another 30 years -:)
I rate this one above Taste of Chengdu from last night: decor, foods and professionalism. Size makes no difference in my book.
