Nassau County Museum of Art (NCMA)

One Museum Dr,
Roslyn, NY 11576

The Nassau museum is on poet William Cullen Bryant‘s land, part of Cedarmere. In 1890s, this portion was sold to congressman Lloyd Bryce, who then hired Ogden Codman, Jr. to build him a home, in the style of Georgian Revival. Henry Clay Frick (1849-1919) purchased it in 1919 for his son Childs, who lived there for nearly half a century with his wife and children. Nassau County purchased this after Childs’ death (1883-1965) in 1966 and turned it into a museum.

When we visited it with kids, it was called Fine Arts Museum of Long Island (1978-2003). There are many sculptures dotting the landscape (Sculpture Garden, map). In addition, this holiday season the museum added A Bug’s Night. The museum at the Mansion is exhibiting works of Matisse, Degas, Juan Gris, Vuillard and Bearden.
