Sherry-Netherland Hotel on 5th Ave

781 Fifth Avenue
New York, NY

Walking up the Fifth Avenue, this little tower is the most visible. This parcel of land was occupied by Hotel New Netherland, which was designed by William H. Hume (??-??) for William Waldorf Astor (1848-1919). That building was demolished in 1926, replaced by this one.

Recently, Sherry-Netherland Hotel has been in the news because of … Guo Wengui, who purchased the top for $67.5m in 2015, and was trying to sell it at discount in 2020 ⇓

Joe’s Steam Rice Roll 石磨肠粉王

136-21 Roosevelt Ave
Flushing, NY 11354

This little shop is inside a mini mall, Landmark Quest Mall 地王商场 on Roosevelt Ave, two buildings away from Main Street. Don’t let the facade stop you. Be brave, venturing inside.

Passing by this litter shop inside a mini mall countless  times and even ordered once long time ago. Glad to see they’ve a page on yelp. They make the rice roll fresh and now even provide a few veggies at no extra charge – you can choose up to three. I got a regular beef roll small for $4 (large is $6). Silky as usual. The veggies add extra texture and flavor to their super good and delicious rice roll. I went on a weekday at 10:30am, there are six workers. They must be very busy during the rush hours. Good luck and stay well. I think they take credit cards.

On a slow Monday morning.

The Smith

1900 Broadway
New York, NY 10023

This West 64th St & 63rd St restaurant, is one of our go to places for Lincoln Center or Carnegie Hall. It’s always dependable, with good food and service. The mussels is especially appreciated on a winter night: the soup/broth is delicious. The spicy salmon on a bed of crispy rice isn’t spicy (I don’t like crispy rice) but over all they’re good. Both Domaine Pelaquie Cotes du Rhone and Corvidae Lenore Syrah are good.

NYPL reopens, with its treasures

The New York‘s public library at 42nd Street reopens, after covid-19 pandemic. The Treasures – Polonsky  Exhibition on the ground floor, showcasing a few items selected from their massive collections: 56 million items strong, over its 125 years existence. Here again.

A modeling shoot? Not really but it stands out. A post for the Caffe Cino’s The Madness of Lady Bright by Ken Burgess (1935-89). Caffe Cino (1958-68) was the birthplace of off-off broadway house.

Pigeons are seen everywhere – they and big cities are always hand in hand, commingled.

… and pigeons … the last one was Charles Dickens’ letter opener.

Tal First @ Morse Hall

Morse Recital Hall
Juilliard, New York

The Hall is smaller than Paul Recital Hall.

The violist First’s a student of Itzhak Perlman and Li Lin – who’s Li? His chin rest looks high tech. I throughly enjoyed his performance and the pieces he chose! Easy on the eye and ear. The pianist is Chaeyoung Park.

aicf: Tal First began his violin studies with teacher Geri Ferber at the age of 6. He continued his studies with Ms. Svetlana Simannovsky at the Thelma-Yellin School of Arts and later on at the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music, while serving as an

Beethoven @ Carnegie

A long day in the City.

The concert at Carnegie Hall was good but begins late. Sandwiched between Beethoven‘s two symphonies ( #2 and #3 Eroica) Climb (2019) by composer Jessica Hunt (1987-) is somewhat less attractive, it makes me cringe. Her short piece was commissioned by Philadelphia Orchestra, who suffers some kind of illness. She has my sympathy but I certainly don’t appreciate her music.

I walked 8.1 miles,

and encountered many kind people.

I took the N20 bus to Flushing for Joe’s Steam rice roll but didn’t know for sure if I’ve enough fare for the bus. The driver quickly pressed something and said, “it’s ok” after I inserted the Metro card. After the rice roll, I walked to the street
level subway elevator. A kid with a bike was inside. I hesitated for a second. He reached out, pressing the button, “Come in.”
“Going down?” I asked before stepping in. What was I thinking? Duh…
“Yes,” He replied.
“Oh, silly me … must be my age.”
“No, you’re fine. I got your back.”
So sweet and nice.

Down to the subway, the booth staff was out helping an Asian lady. The cash machines on the other side has line too. So I waited.
“Can I help you?” He turned to me when he was done.
“Oh, no, thanks. Just need to refill.”
“Give it to me, I do it quicker.”
When I take out my credit card, he said, “you know, with the chip, you don’t
need metro card any more.”

He walked me to the turn dial, “just tap it.”
“Cool,” I said. Then thought about if this can handle transfer from the bus ride.
“Yes, it can,” he said with a smile. He then took out a card and swiped it to let me in.
I was still holding my metro card. “So this is useless now?”
“Yes, keep it as souvenir to your boyfriend.”
“I don’t have one,”
“No worry, we’ll get you one.”
ha ha ha … happy holidays
As he hurried back to his booth, I tap my credit card for the next rider, “happy holidays, paying forward.”
